Other College Welfare

Welfare around Lincoln

The MCR Welfare and Equality officers are of course a great source of support if you have any difficulties or need someone to talk to, but sometimes you might not be able to contact them, or you may simply feel more comfortable talking to someone different. If this is the case, there are plenty of other people in College who can help you with specific problems or more general ones. A few of these are listed below:

JCR Welfare Officer / Other JCR Officers

Yes, they’re undergraduates, but they’re mostly quite nice really. The JCR committee might be slightly surprised to hear from you, but it’s quite legitimate for you to go to them if you want to, since all MCR members at Lincoln are by default part of the JCR. The current JCR Welfare Officer is Rhea Newman.

Lincoln MCR does not have a distinct LGBT rep. You are more than welcome to approach Hollie or Josh about LGBT issues. However, there is also the JCR LGBT rep, Peter Beaumont, who would be happy to speak to you.

Further information on JCR welfare can be found on posters in the JCR, or by going to this page.

Graduate Advisors

Each graduate student at Lincoln is assigned a ‘graduate advisor’, who is a Senior Member (i.e. lecturer, tutor, fellow) of College, working in the same or a similar field to the student. Your graduate advisor is available to give advice and support on matters relating to your academic studies, and can also give informal advice on other matters such as finance or administration. He or she should get in touch with you within the first week or two of term.

Senior Tutor / Tutor for Graduates

Dr Louise Durning is both the Senior Tutor and the Tutor for Graduates. This means that she has overall responsibility for matters of academic welfare (such as arranging graduate advisors) and you should go to her if you have any problems relating to your studies which your graduate advisor cannot help you with. As Tutor for Graduates, Dr Durning is also the graduates’ chief liaison with the SCR (Senior Common Room – like the MCR but for the College fellows), and helps defend graduate interests before the governing body. If you need to contact Dr Durning, her office is on the first floor of Staircase 4, and you can email her, or call her on (01865 2)79801.

Tutor for Women

Dr Susan Brigden is the Tutor for Women at Lincoln, and is available to help and advise female students who feel that they suffer any discrimination in their academic life as a result of their gender. You can email her, or call her on (01865 2)79775.

College Chaplain

Gregory Platten is College Chaplain. His primary concern is the welfare of all students, staff and fellows. He is always available for a chat or non-judgmental advice, and regardless of denomination, whether you are of a different faith or no faith at all. He can also put you in touch with a wide range of sources for support, counselling or medical help. If you can’t find him in his rooms (Chapel Quad 5.2), then try phoning him on 07891124478.
